MORE INFO ABOUT THE WORK
My Summit Is Out of Reach is the third work in a series of “performances arranged for print." Conceived by Matty Davis in 2021, these works represent a new form for performance to inhabit, to be experienced, and to be understood. Pushing beyond the bounds of traditional live work, in which audience and performer intimately share time and space, Davis transforms the core principles of performance, distilling them into the materiality of the page, and synthesizes choreography, writing, photography, and design, to create dynamic and utterly original performances intended for print.
My Summit Is Out of Reach is a 13-part work that is mailed to its audience via USPS over an unspecified amount of time, shaped according to the work’s real-time production. Each part contains various combinations of original texts, silver gelatin prints, and other materials that layer and build meaning over time. As these parts slowly unfold, the audience follows Matty Davis as he searches numerous mountain ranges in the United States for “the surface and the slope,” a concept that describes a set of conditions that allow a specific dance to occur. The pursuit of the dance itself - up, down, and across various mountains, as well as other kinds of terrain - thrusts the performer into intractable relation with other species, ecosystems, histories, and senses of time and scale that induce reckonings with our own bodies and place in the world.
